डमड्डमड्डमड्डमन्निनादवड्डमर्वयं
चकार चण्डताण्डवं तनोतु नः शिवः शिवम् ॥
The cascading Gaṅgā, the magnificent serpent garland, and the resounding ḍamaru come together as Shiva begins His powerful Tāṇḍava—may that Shiva bring auspiciousness to us.
Another verse celebrates the extraordinary beauty of His dancing form:
धराधरेन्द्रनन्दिनीविलासबन्धुबन्धुर
स्फुरद्दिगन्तसन्ततिप्रमोदमानमानसे ।
कृपाकटाक्षधोरणीनिरुद्धदुर्धरापदि
क्वचिद्दिगम्बरे मनो विनोदमेतु वस्तुनि ॥
“May my mind find joy in that divine One whose delight is inseparable from the playful beauty of the Daughter of the Mountain, whose radiance fills the directions, and whose compassionate glance dispels even the most difficult troubles.”
And the famous refrain of the Stotram captures the sheer exhilaration of Shiva’s dance:
डमड्डमड्डमड्डमन्निनादवड्डमर्वयं
चकार चण्डताण्डवं तनोतु नः शिवः शिवम् ॥
The repeated rhythm of “ḍamaḍḍamaḍḍamaḍḍaman” almost makes one hear the ḍamaru itself—the sound, movement, and energy of Shiva becoming one.
