Shri Lakshmi — The Radiant Emergence from the Kshīra Sāgara
A majestic portrayal of Śrī Lakṣmī as she emerges from the Kṣīra Sāgara during the Samudra Manthana, as described in the Śrīmad Bhāgavata Mahāpurāṇa. Seated upon a magnificent golden throne beneath a royal parasol, adorned in radiant yellow garments and divine ornaments, Maa Lakshmi is surrounded by sages, ṛṣis, Brahmanas, Gandharvas, the Diggajas, and the Devas, who bow before the eternal embodiment of Śrī, prosperity, beauty, auspiciousness, and divine grace. The scene also evokes the sacred invocation of Kardama and Chiklīta found in the Śrī Sūkta.
कर्दमेन प्रजाभूता मयि सम्भव कर्दम ।
श्रियं वासय मे कुले मातरं पद्ममालिनीम् ॥“O Kardama, may Śrī, the lotus-garlanded Mother, abide in my lineage.”
And the Śrī Sūkta beautifully invokes Her as:
आर्द्रां पुष्करिणीं पुष्टिं पिङ्गलां पद्ममालिनीम् ।
चन्द्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवेदो म आवह ॥“May Agni bring to me Lakshmi—the radiant, golden One, lotus-garlanded, nourishing, and resplendent like the moon.” (Sanskrit Documents)
The Bhāgavata Purāṇa describes Lakṣmī’s appearance from the ocean and the worship offered to Her by the Devas, Brahmanas, Gandharvas and celestial beings, before She chooses Lord Viṣṇu as Her eternal consort. (Sanatan Hindu Dharma)
